Luciterra Fusion Dance School

____________

What Style of Dance is This? Read more here

Welcome to the Luciterra School Of Dance. Our school is aimed at providing innovative, accessible, and conscientious dance instruction with a variety of teachers and styles from MENAHT dances (Middle Eastern, North African, Hellenistic, Turkish) to Contemporary and Street styles to give fusion dancers a well rounded dance education. We believe in the importance of educating students on the roots and histories of the dances they are learning and recognize that fusion dance is not a singular style in itself. Our offerings and instructors will change each season and classes will be held live online and recorded for viewing after. Due to Covid-19 we are unsure of when we will be holding in person classes again but we hope to be there soon!

For access to online fusion dance classes anytime with Luciterra instructor Nikki Mae, check out her online studio on Patreon. Her online studio has classes for every level of dancer with a range of price's to suit your budget and new videos coming out every month! Visit patreon.com/nikkimae for more info.

Afro Fusion Sharqi Dance with Pynksy Shell

____________

Luciterra is pleased to present the first workshop in our Fall Fusion Dance Education Series, Afro Sharqi Fusion with Pynksy Shell!

Welcome to Afro Fusion Sharqi Dance, a dance style that fuses different elements of African Dance culture, from folklore to traditional and urban. A dance style that brings together the dance elements of Africa (from North to South, East to West and Central). The canvas of this dance is Africa. It's all about Unification.

In this series of classes, I will always start with a small introduction about dances from Africa and rhythms with special emphasis on their value and how to use it. I will also make sure to always mention where the music is from, the movement context and aesthetics. Then some basic movements from this vocabulary will be introduced and see how they can be combined with Raqs Sharqi movements. Sometimes the focus will be on arms and foot/legs patterns, other times the focus will be on space and weight. Here students can learn how to use jumps while dancing, the importance of the circle shape, the relationship between gravity and dance, and many other concepts. I will always make sure to give some bibliographic references and concepts that students can do some research after class. This is an open level, which means that people who have never done any Dance from Africa (folkloric, traditional or urban) are totally welcome.

Fusion Choreography with Nikki Mae

____________

Join Luciterra instructor Nikki Mae for an exciting Fusion Dance choreography series! There will be an optional video creation project at the end of the series for those wishing to showcase the new piece they have learned. This choreography will be an intermediate/advanced choreo but options will be given for all dancers/levels who are up to the challenge. It will be a fusion of hip and torso isolations inspired by both MENAT styles (Middle Eastern, North African, Turkish) and Popping/Waving. There will be full body movements incorporated from Contemporary and Jazz styles in true Luciterra fashion! AKA Neo Bellydance.

Nikki Mae is a movement artist, teacher, and massage therapist living on the unceded occupied territories of the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) and xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) Nations. Movement both liberates and enthralls Nikki in all its different forms and she recognizes it as a way to empower and connect to herself and her community.

From her hometown in Calgary AB to her current home in Vancouver BC Nikki’s studies include a wide variety of different modalities including American Fusion Bellydance, MENAT (Middle Eastern, North African, Turkish) styles, Contemporary, Jazz, Whacking, and Cirque. Her journey into MENAT dance, otherwise known in America as ‘bellydance’, began in her early teenage years, and continues to be a primary style in her current work as a fusion artist. The contrasting sharpness and fluidity in the isolated movements of the body and the expressive nature of the style are what made her fall in love with this dance form. Since moving to BC over ten years ago, Nikki has been exploring the world of Fusion Bellydance through paths of deeper learning of the history of the style and the many socio-political aspects of how and where it’s practiced. Her performance style elegantly blends her love for the modalities she studies, seamlessly weaving them together in a unique expression of her lived experiences.

Nikki Mae began as an instructor at the Luciterra School Of Dance in 2017 where she now co-manages the school and production company with partner Maeghan Tuckey. As an instructor she explores with her students not only the movement vocabularies that inform her style but also the histories and current politics of the styles she blends. Nikki believes that fusion dance is a beautiful thing when practiced from a place of mutual respect and understanding of the cultures it shares in and is rooted in solid technique. She also draws on her career as a Registered Massage Therapist to share her knowledge of anatomy and self care with her students to maintain a healthy, body positive approach to their practice. Forever a student and lover of dance, Nikki is honoured to share her passion with you.

Contemporary with Rosa Chimenti

____________

Luciterra is pleased to present the third workshop in our Fall Fusion Dance Education Series, Contemporary with Rosa Chimenti!

This workshop is for anyone looking to add more dynamic movement to their style. Rosa will guide us through a series of technical exercises, improv, and choreography. The full class can be done at home taking those with small spaces into consideration. This workshop places emphasis on the importance that, the parallel work on the body itself, as well as the context in which we move - Body, Object, Space, Reason, Emotion - grow organically and symbiotically.

Rosa started dancing (at the age of 13) jazz dance at the Conservatoire of Luxembourg and moved to France to continue her training at EPSE Danse and received her Dance Degree BA (Hons). Additionally, living in London (UK), Auckland (NZ) and Vancouver BC (Canada) she build her career as a professional dancer and as a dance teacher. Rosa has trained with some of the greatest dancers/choreographers in the industry and this experience inspired Rosa to perfect her own skills with respect to contemporary, jazz, heels and waacking.
